Insider Knowledge:
Where's good to ski in Chamonix?
Author: James F Hardiman
Chamonix is a fragmented resort – split of 4 main ski areas, each offering a different experience and capable of giving a full two days variety and fun at each one. Not everyone likes the fact you have to travel by shuttle to these ski areas (Brevant, Argentiere, Tour), however the best ski area Brevant / Flegere is only a few mins walk from the Bdn Hotel front door! Nice!
Le Tour is the place to go for beginner nurseries and has simply some of the best novice slopes I have seen in the Alps! The ski schools are also excellent. The other place is at the bottom of Brevant on the slopes close to the Hotel Bdn. Its flat, chilled out and perfect for learners!
Chamonix is home to Mont Blanc which is (they say) Europe’s highest hill, and it offers some of the best Off Piste in the World. Simple as that. You will find a quality of Intermediate and advanced skiing and riding that encourages tourists and visiting riders from all over the world! From the famous Valley Blanche to the Grand Montets, all areas provide oodles of off piste and freeriding terrain: steep, not so steep and downright hairy!
For eats – then try Munchies in Rue Moulin for a warm welcome and excellent food, or La Caleche for a charming French atmosophere and great steaks. For drinks then Chambre Neuf, Baar’d Up, Le Terrace (for bands) and the Bdn bar itself for cheap drinks and a chilled out atmospheric venue for you and the other half! Lunch- then the Gecko, (50m from the hotel Bdn), is excellent, friendly and cheap!
